I didn’t bother returning to the briefing.

Not only would Grady not want me there after what had gone down, but the thought of going over the facts—over the same crap—made me feel nauseous.

Messaging Jay, I told him I needed a day out of the office before heading home. He replied with a message of concern, asking why, so I pointed him in Grady’s direction. Let him come up with an excuse for my absence.

When I got home, I planned to take a bath. Once relaxed, I could meditate some, probe at what I’d seen in the visions to see if I’d missed anything. But before I made it to my bedroom to strip down, I ran into Kaleb.

“What are you doing home?” he asked, munching on a sandwich.

“Grady is going through some shit at the minute,” I replied. “Ignorance might be his best friend for a while. I thought I’d take a bath, meditate, try to work from here for a while.”

“On your visions?”

“You know me too well.” I grabbed his hand and bit into his sandwich. He frowned, pulling it out of reach.

“Why do girls always pinch a guy’s food?”

“Like you’ve never pinched my food?”

He halted knowing he couldn’t deny it. “Ah, okay. I’ll let you off.”

“Yeah. Thanks for that. I’d also like to thank you for speaking with Cole.”

“So, you’re thanking me for that now, huh?”

“Yes. I am. He called me.”

“He did?”

“Yes. On my way to work. We’ve cleared the air, you could say. He gets it now. And so do I. Even though feelings are still there…”

“For him or for you?”

“For him. It still hurts for me to know it can’t go anywhere. Love sucks.”

“It sure does.”

“Where is everyone?”

“Bernard, Zax and Libby are on shift again today. Mayra is upstairs, as usual, working on her spells.” He stepped closer. “But there’s no one around if you want to talk about how much you’re feeling me right now.”

My cheeks burned. I’d forgotten all about my big confession to him.

“I need to take a bath.”

He laughed as I walked away. “You can keep running. But I’m not gonna let this drop.”

Pretending not to hear him, I raced to the bathroom and didn’t look back.
